The changes at the Emirates Western Force continue… this time to the players’ faces as they prepare for facial hair battle during the month of Movember.
Movember is a global campaign raising awareness and funds for men’s mental health and prevention of prostate cancer across Australia, with 10 Emirates Western Force members involved in growing moustaches over the next 30 days.
Pek Cowan, Ben McCalman, Kieran Longbottom, Locky McCaffrey and Ben Whittaker will represent the forwards, forming “Crusher’s Crumb Catchers” in honour of fellow hairy forward Toby ‘Crusher’ Lynn.
Will Tupou will lead “Tupes’ ‘Taches” alongside the backline combination of Winston Stanley, Alfie Mafi, Mick Snowden and Corey Brown.
Crusher’s Crumb Catchers captain Pek Cowan says he’s excited to lead his side into the mo battle for such a great cause.
“While forwards-versus-backs always brings out our competitive nature, the main aim here is to raise money for fighting depression and prostate cancer which affects so many people,” Cowan said.
“Men’s health is an issue that men often ignored so any part we can play in raising its awareness, the better.
“We’re very committed on taking out this competition. While we don’t grow them very often, our team takes a great deal of pride in our mos.”
Tupou says he’s looking forward to assuming the leadership role with his side.
“It’s a great honour to captain Tupes’ ‘Taches,” he said. “We’ve recruited Corey Brown as our marquee grower and the rest of us will be doing our best to support him.
“We love a bit of competition with the forwards and it’s great to be able to support these great causes through our rivalry.
“Everyone loves an underdog and we’re up against some tough competition but we’ll definitely be doing our bit to raise the most money.”
Neither side was permitted a head start for their month’s growth with both teams bringing their razors to training today to remove any facial hair they have been cultivating during the beginning of the preseason.
Both teams are be calling on the support of their teammates, friends, family and the fans to help them raise as much money as possible for men’s mental health and prostate cancer.
