Country Competitions

Country rugby has been identified as a key growth area for rugby in Western Australia. There are currently three recognised sub-unions within the country areas covering the South West, Great Southern and Eastern Goldfields. The Geraldton region is in an early development stage at present.

South West Competition

The South West Rugby Union (SWRU), situated in the South West corner of Western Australia, runs a four team senior competition consisting of the following clubs, Dunsborough, Margaret River, Bunbury City & Collie. George Kelly is the current President of the SWRU. There will be a new club based in Busselton catering for Junior Players.

Great Southern Competition

The Great Southern Rugby Union (GSRU), covers the southern most parts of Western Australia and conducts various rugby initiatives in the area. The three main clubs are Albany Lions, Kattaning Krushers and Narrogin-Dryandra, with clubs being developed in Denmark and Kojonup.

Eastern Goldfields Competition

The Eastern Goldfields Rugby Union (EGRU), is situated around the mining towns of Kalgoorlie, Boulder and Kambalda. The following senior clubs form the nucleus of this region - Boulder/WASM, Bushwackers and Stormers.

Geraldton Region

There is currently one club playing out of Geraldton, the Geraldton Internationals. The driving forces behind this club are Peter Eliott-Lockhart and Brett Inglis. Being a one-team region, the Internationals are always looking for invitation games.

Newman Region and the "Bloody Slow" Cup

Our northern-most region is trying to establish a rugby culture within the heart of the Pilbara. Its main claim to fame is the annual "Bloody Slow" Cup, contested between the Australian Police and their New Zealand counterparts late in the calendar year.

Country Carnival

The highlight of the country rugby season is fast approaching. It is being hosted in Esperance over the Foundation Day long weekend, and will be contested by nine teams. Results will follow soon after the event.
