There are currently two recognised sub-unions within the country areas covering the South West and Eastern Goldfields, both of which have both Junior and Senior rugby competitions. Geraldton, Broome, Kununurra, Newman and Pert Hedland are all developing and play irregularly in Senior Rugby tournaments.
South West Competition
The South West Rugby Union (SWRU), situated in the South West corner of Western Australia, runs a four team Senior competition consisting of the following clubs, Dunsborough, Margaret River, Bunbury City & Katanning. The Juniors features a three team competition with Bunbury City Bulls, Bunbury Barbarians and Busselton Jets.
Eastern Goldfields Competition
The Eastern Goldfields Rugby Union (EGRU), is situated around the mining towns of Kalgoorlie, Boulder and Kambalda. The following senior clubs form the nucleus of this region - Boulder/WASM, Bushwackers, Island Barbarians and Stormers. There is also a strong junior competition played alongside the senior competition.
There is currently one club playing out of Geraldton, the Geraldton Tiger Sharks. The driving forces behind this club are Warren Abrams, David Tyson and John MacFarlane. Being a one-team region, the Internationals are always looking for invitational games.
Newman Region and the "Bloody Slow" Cup
In Newman a strong established rugby culture within the heart of the Pilbara has formed around the annual "Bloody Slow" Cup, contested between the Australian Police and their New Zealand counterparts in October every year. The event sees huge crowds and is the focal point of the Police Legacy fundraising through the Bloody Slow Cup events.
In 2013 The Broome 7s was established along with the formation of the Broome Luggers Rugby Club. This tournament saw Kunnunura and Port Hedland form teams and this has been the catalyst for a number of friendly matches throughout the year in the Kimberley region.
