WA finished the National Championships in seventh place after defeating Victoria 13-12 in Brisbane today.

Another strong start by WA had them pressuring the Victorian line in the early minutes. Quicker recycling of the ball keep the big Vic forwards on the backfoot, and WA were rewarded for sustained pressure with a penalty in front. Centre Jack Dawson couldn’t convert, so at the first drinks break the scores remained nil-all.

With a majority of possession and territory WA received another kickable penalty, which flyhalf Kyle Godwin slotted to give WA a 3-0 lead.

With momentum and some strong forward work, lock Lachie Valentine, went over to give WA an 8-0 lead, which was extended to 10-0 when Godwin converted.

A second penalty goal to Godwin shortly after the half time break gave WA a 13 point lead, but Victoria worked hard to get into WA’s half and they took their opportunity to score to cut the lead to 13-5.

With desperation in their play, Victoria were running out of time to score twice to take the lead. With three minutes to go they scored and converted to take the score to 13-12.

WA held out under pressure to take the game and 7th place.
