Game 1 vs Sydney Juniors
Monday 29 September 2008
Nudgee College, Brisbane
Team: 1 Todd Willcox 2 Tristan Ashford 3 Oli Hoskins 4 Lachie Valentine 5 James Eliaschewsky 6 Hayden Croghan 7 Nathan Oakley 8 Manasseh Gudgeon 9 Shaun Baker 10 Kyle Godwin 11 Jack Dawson 12 Jerome Rameka 13 Jordan Smith 14 Jordan Simi 15 Curtis Rona 16 Nick Corsbie 17 Sam Smith 18 Chris Johnson 19 Bryan Lush 20 Liam Burley 21 Sean Taggart 22 Stephen Blair 23 Lachie Burges
Result: Sydney Juniors 22 def WA 7
Scorers: Kyle Godwin try; Jack Dawson conversion
WA started the National Champs in style with a try in the third minute from a well executed lineout and wide backline move. Jordan Simi made plenty of space down the left touchline to feed the ball back inside to Kyle Godwin who dived over in the corner. A conversion by Jack Dawson had WA leading 7-0.
Sydney Juniors got into the game directly from the restart from a WA dropped ball.
WA spent much of the rest of the first half defending as Sydney were able to recycle the ball with aggressive and effective breakdown work. A pushover try from a well constructed maul to Sydney took the score to WA 7, Sydney 5.
Sydney continued to pressure WA’s line, and were rewarded from a referee error after a Sydney player picked up a ball from an offside position to spread it wide with the Sydney winger scoring out wide untouched. Sydney lead for the first time 10-7 going into half time.
A similar pattern continued in the second half with WA doing a lot of defending in their own half. Another forwards try to Sydney took the score to 15-7, before they went over again in the corner to reach the final score of 22-7.
After such a promising start, and fantastic try, WA fell back into habits that the players would get away with in Perth club rugby but not at the National Champs.
Some positive play however will give the team the confidence to perform well against the ACT on Wednesday.

Game 1 vs Easts U15s
Sunday 28 September 2008
Easts Rugby Club, Brisbane
Team: 1 Mason Maloney 2 Richard Cooper 3 Scott Tolmie 4 Kevin Bush 5 Tom O’Day 6 Cory Garner 7 Matt Monteath 8 Ephrim Aumua 9 Ethan Carlisle 10 Antini Brown 11 Nick Wolman 12 John McCabe 13 Lane Mitchell 14 Daniel Long 15 Iasiah Rehutai 16 Klay Wikaira 17 James Milligan 18 Cole Peppiatt 19 Dylan Ainsworth 20 Adrian Shanahan 21 Conor McDougall 22 Josh Wheeler 23 Scott Nichol
Result: WA 22 def Easts 0
Scorers: Cory Garner, Ethan Carlisle, Adrain Shanahan try; John McCabe 2 conversions, 1 penalty
Easts kicked off and put pressure from the outset, however the WA defence was up to the challenge and started finding space through the Easts midfield.
WA had three kickable penalties in the first half but chose to go for the lineout. WA pressured the Easts line but they held out well.
WA went very close to scoring from a drive off a lineout but Easts continually cleared from their 22 to release pressure.
A penalty to John McCabe at the 20th minute mark resulted in the only score for the half.
Once again WA dominated territory and possession in the second half and so it was only a matter of time before the points came.
Cory Garner was in the middle of a driving maul to score in the 6th minute of the second half. McCabe converted to take the score to 10-0.
Four minutes later a little hesitation from the defensive line allowed Ethan Carlisle to dart over from the back of a scrum to take the score to 17-0 after the McCabe conversion.
The WA bench was used very effectively with the fresh legs making a difference late in the game. It was replacement front rower Adrian Shanahan who made some dynamic runs after coming on and scored a good try in the 17th minute to make the final score 22-0.
Game 2 vs BJRU U15 Rep Side
Tuesday 30 September 2008
Easts Rugby Club, Brisbane
Team: 1 Mason Maloney 2 Richard Cooper 3 Scott Tolmie 4 Kevin Bush 5 Tom O’Day 6 Dylan Ainsworth 7 Matt Monteath 8 Ephrim Aumua 9 Ethan Carlisle 10 Kyle Godwin 11 Cole Peppiatt 12 John McCabe 13 Daniel Long 14 James Milligan 15 Nick Wolman 16 Conor McDougall 17 Cory Garner 18 Adrian Shanahan 19 Lane Mitchell 20 Scott Nichol 21 Klay Wikaira 22 Iasiah Rehutai 23 Josh Wheeler
Result: BJRU 15s 17 def WA 10
Scorers: Mason Maloney try, John McCabe conversion, penalty
Brisbane came out strong with a try in the second minute with speed and quick transfer of the ball to dot it down out wide. The successful conversion gave Brisbane a 7-0 lead.
WA then started to work their way into the game and scored a strong try through some good forward play and a driving maul. Mason Maloney barged his way over and John McCabe kicked the conversion in the 18th minute.
A penalty goal to each team had the scores locked at 10-all going in to half time.
The second half was a very even and well contested affair with some great rugby being played. Both teams were able to find holes in the defence but good scrambling from each team shut down those opportunities.
Brisbane were finally rewarded for their efforts with a converted try to take the lead at 17-10. WA worked hard to get into the Brisbane half and from a well worked move were able to attack the Brisbane line but were forced out only metres from the line.
The fulltime scoreline of 17-10 was reflective of an excellent game of rugby.
